Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 – 3PC/1User (Disc Version) With Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, you and your kids can create great schoolwork and home projects from multi-page bibliographies to multimedia presentations. Yes, some things are different, and it will take some getting used to; but, once you realize the improvement in efficiency you’ll agree that the changes are mostly for the positive.

I’m using stand alone versions of Outlook and Publisher (both 2007) and Access (2003). I had decided to leave these as is. Upon installing 2010 I was presented with two buttons: “Upgrade” and “Customize”. I picked curtain 1 (upgrade). My bad! The install then proceeded to remove Outlook, Publisher and Access. Since the program I was installing did not include these products I think it’s pretty bogus for the install process to remove them. I don’t know if the “Customize” button would have allowed them to stay. I reinstalled the 3 programs and everything was fine, but I should not have had to waste time doing this. The only thing that I truly wish had changed but didn’t is that this version does not include Outlook. In my title, I noted that it is “probably” not worth the upgrade. The probably depends upon what you are upgrading from.

If you are using Office 2007, stick with 2007. This has a slightly longer load time and not much in the way of usable new features. If you are upgrading from an even earlier version of Office, then this is probably the way to go. Most of the changes in Excel deal with very large datasets. There is a new PowerPivot add-in which works great if you are dealing with a very large dataset that does not fit in one Excel spreadsheet. Office 2011 comes with a new “activation PIN” that must be activated by the sale merchant (similar to how a giftcard will not work unless they scan it at the register). You are then required to enter the PIN on Microsoft’s website, at which point (if all has gone well), you will receive your product ID (CD key) that you then use to install the software. In theory, the process should be painless—but Microsoft has been having issues nationwide with activation of the PIN (even if you pay for the software) and I had to deal with about a week’s worth of hassles and e-mails/phone calls between Microsoft and my vendor before I could get my legitimately bought-and-paid-for software installable on my computer.

PowerPivot pulls the data from multiple sources (several Excel spreadsheets for instance) to analyze it. That is available in the Home and Business version. When you try editing a formula in a conditional format in Excel 2004, you cannot use the cursor keys for editing. All cursor keys do is to add cell references. My work around is to have a text editor handy so I can copy the formula, edit in the text editor, and past back into Excel. One would think that after 8 years, Microsoft would have had lots of opportunity to fix this. Not so. Same bug. Capture ideas and set them apart with video-editing features and dynamic text effects. Then easily collaborate with classmates without being face-to-face thanks to new Web Apps tools.

I am someone who uses Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a very regular basis, who really liked some of the changes in Office 2007 but who thought some things needed tweaking, so when given the opportunity for the beta edition I jumped on it and have not been disappointed. Office 2010 is to Office 2007 what Windows 7 was to Vista; that is, there are not many breakthrough, drastically different features, but a whole lot of polishing and cleanup to make it easier and more efficient. Overall, the program seems to run faster, incorporates many of the most commonly used options and makes them more accessible (eliminating many dialog boxes and tabs) and allows for more customization.

Teacher’s Pet Pre Kindergarten As one of the other reviewers said, there is so much to this software that’s not in the listing.These are GREAT learning games. There should be more detail available on this page about what you’re buying and took a bit of a gamble but I was lucky. Bought this for my just turned 4yr old granddaugther. She has been into books and Disney movies but not computers. Thought it was time to introducer her to video games (but not the action type my young grandsons love). She has taken to this series like a fish to water. Loves being able to play the games herself….and also show us how well she can do. We like the games because they have a lot of variety done in a fun way. There is art, music, geography, ABCs, logic, colors etc. You get a lot for the price, 5 seperate learning games,Reader Rabbit Learn to Read With Phonics (Preschool & Kindergarten) by The Learning Company reading, science, math, thinking skills, and time and place with each one having 5-7 different learning games. Very 3-6 age appropriate. THe K disk is more story & more detail — help the mouse find letters & fill in a map.

I think my 5yr old lacks the desire right now to sit thru all that, but it seems fun & challenging without being hard. Will not load after installation. Product description says it supports Windows XP. I am running 64-bit Windows 7, which is likely the problem. My recommendation is that you should not purchase this product if you have a 64-bit OS. Reader Rabbit Reading Ages 4-6 We ordered this for our four year old daughter and, while it is probably a bit above her level (she is not reading yet but is beginning to sound out letters, etc. and when we read to her she will point out letters that she recognizes…but has not yet begun to recognize entire words), it is a wonderful program!My 3yr old tries to do it, but he can’t follow the steps yet. I would have given this four stars (maybe even five, but it’s my first software purchase & I’ve got nothing to compare it to) but I had to bump one off because the software doesn’t download; you have to change between disks & that is a huge drag for me when one kid is done & the other wants to do the other program. That’s just a hassle that isn’t necessary. Outside of this, I think the program is great. The kids spend maybe 20 minutes on a Saturday or Sunday on the computer. I would recommend this product. It was a good first purchase for us.

My son who is 4 loves it and I use it as a reward for completing his school work with a good attitude or a fun break. But what do I know! She spent three hours on it the first day learning how to navigate through the various activities and books. I was amazed since she is a whirlwind of energy. Since then she views it daily and learns the letters and words and is beginning to pick them birthday missed kindergarten so she is in pre-k, this is a little girl who had a speech problem so bad that at age 3 I couldn’t understand what she was saying. She did know the sounds of most every letter, but wasn’t reading at all. Well in just 5 days she whipped through the first level to help Sam get to the castle, and by the end of it, I did the assessment over, there is one for your child to do so the game can challenge but not overwhelm your child. In 5 days only, she actually read every single word in the sentences that are shown in the assessment. She didn’t get a couple of words right, she got every single word RIGHT! I can’t say enough about this way of teaching, nothing short of miraculous. I purchased the reader rabbit with phonics to Purchased it on Lightning Deals because of the good reviews and great price.

I’m so glad that I did. It was a great leaning tool for kids to learn and practice their typing skills. A great buy! give her some variety and will write a review on that when we start that one. OH and I also highly recommend school zone products, nearly everything she is doing in pre-K she already knew thanks to reader rabbit, and My daughter is 3 years old and she is beginning to read. I love Reader Rabbit. The animation and the music really holds her attention. The repititon helps her to remember. I have students asking to come in during recess and lunch times to practice their skills and have developed a waiting list and timers to accommodate them all. The games are clever and teach them a specific typing skill. The skills build sequentially yet provide opportunity for review to reinforce their learning. You get results right away so the kids can practice the keys they are not as good at striking. I give it a big 5 stars. It’s easy to load and run and has no computer problems or bugs! Typing Instructor For Kids Platinum (Windows/Mac) I bought this program based on several reviews I read. It is a great program. Even my 4 year old uses it. The games keep my kids captivated for hours and they are learning to type at the same time. Highly recommend it. There are so many educational products out there but Reader Rabbit, Richard Scary and Leap Products are among my favorites. school zone products and this was a child that couldn’t speak. out of the hardcover books she has.

In the end what matters is that she finds this edition of Reader Rabbit engaging and that she is learning from the activities and the interactive stories. Very cute characters and great quality. I purchased this for my 3 yr. 2 mo. old. I thought it would be a good time to expose her to the computer while she learns. She loves it! In two 15-20 min. sessions, she is already getting the hang of the mouse. We have tried math patterns (red, green, red, green, ____, etc.) for months at home and she didn’t want to have any part of it. When the chicken in Thinkin’ Things did it, it was the coolest thing ever. She loves the sounds and the fact that the animals all talk to her.

Ubuntu Linux Complete Edition 8.04 There’s so much to like about Ubuntu, it’s hard to know where to begin. I’ve now got two Linux machines that are purring along and doing exactly what they should without throwing me any curveballs. Getting Started Technical Support: 60 days of unlimited customer support. Additionally, while the all of the functional bits of the operating system can be burned to a single CD-ROM (as this listing indicates) it is not “complete”. Additional software and updates are located in the Ubuntu Repositories. Repositories are centralized software locations where you can obtain additional features and programs that are not installed on a “default” system. OpenSUSE 12.1 Linux, 4-disks DVD Installation and Reference Set The Ubuntu Repositories are hosted online but there is a an official version where the Repositories have been burned to disc, but this is not it. Another benefit is that it is “open source” software. That is, anyone (at least any programmer who understands it) can get a copy of the source code and see how it works, and even make changes.

Wow, who would have thought that Unix would be a cool Windows-type operating system. For under $30 I have an OS that is as easy to use as Windows, already has Microsoft Office compatible Word Processing installed, and installed itself adding all the hardware (video and printer) drivers–no muss; no fuss! (actually, I had to replace my Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse with corded ones, but no problem! I don’t need anything else to browse the Internet, download music, Linux Jazz, 6-disks DVD Set, 64-bit Version (Includes Ubuntu 11.10, Kubuntu 11.10, openSUSE 12.1, Fedora 15) Installation and Reference Set and play Youtube! Very cool. With open source software it is completely legal to pass on copies to others; it is even encouraged. Next, I will mention Synaptic.

I am a re-hashed mainfame operating systems guy who also did some support for Unix a decade ago. I bought this to play around with and was amazed at the ease of install compared to all of the dorking around I had to do with my last install of XP. I have not done as much as I thought I would at this point as my real job thinks that it takes a priority over playing with Linux. So my comments are 1) very easy install 2) connected to my wireless network with no problems 3) my wife liked the games 4) very inexpensive OS option if you wish to look at something besides MicroSoft or Apple. Synaptic (based on APT) is a software packaging system that is simply magical. You use it to install or remove software on your computer.

Sage Peachtree Complete Accounting 2012 Peachtree Complete Accounting 2010 The product and support is good, just expensive. I have only had it a few days, but already I can see that this is going to be easy to learn. My husband who has no experience with accounting found it pretty straight-forward too. I switched from QuickBooks to Peachtree back in 2002 and I have never regretted my decision. I find the screens very intuitive and all the information I need to run my business on a daily basis is right in front of me. Sage Peachtree pushes for upgrade every year, but actually you only need to upgrade every three years; I Recently purchased this software to do simple business task, estimates and invoicing the most basic of any business’ needs.

Well guess what if you waist your money on this software they will tell you, you have to upgrade to be able to create estimates and generate them into invoices. You know what upgrades they offered me after being on hold for 2 hours, they just don’t tell you. I know because I’ve been using Peachtree for the last 16 years. Sage Peachtree First Accounting 2012 If you want good support you need to purchase support every year which can be less expensive than upgrade. If you use the payroll you will need to purchase tax services as well. Support is apox $289 for single users & tax service aprox $269. So instead of upgrading just purchase support and tax service and you save program upgrade money. I like Peachtree and it’s an excellent accounting software. Maybe not as simple as Quickbooks, but I think it’s more robust. Since it’s not the standard anymore it doesn’t interact with as many 3rd party products or credit card processing as Quickbooks.

I just got my upgrade notice to go from 2010 to 2012 for the “discounted price” price of $224 from Sage, but as you can see you can buy it from Amazon for $149. In this case, I upgraded from the 2004 version. I was up and running again in about 20 minutes. I found the transition to be smooth and painless, all my 2004 version data was exported automatically and in the proper format.As noted by others, Peachtree is among the most paranoid and customer Terrible customer support. Charge for everything. Software put out of date almost immediately, then no costumer support, you have to buy new version. Who cares how it operates if you can’t use it without buying a new version every year. unfriendly companies on the planet. After purchasing their accounting software from Amazon, and after entering the serial number, and after initial use, the user is then required to take the time to call Peachtree to “Register” the product. No other option are available.

Don’t try to email Peachtree, as they don’t care. Worst of all, as others have noted, the wait time to “Register” the product may take hours. Once the Peachtree registration folks are finally reached, then you will likely be placed on hold yet again. Furthermore (and Amazon should not like this), the Peachtree folks will tell you that unless customers order directly from Peachtree, then the customer will not be “pre-registered”, which essentially means that the customer will be punished for using Amazon. All of this is important because many people ordering their first accounting software will want to keep the same software indefinitely, because it is laborious (if not impossible) to transfer all accounting data to another software later. I assist my clients in acquiring and installing Peachtree software and have purchased from Amazon.com on more than one occasion and I always receive exactly what I ordered and it always comes by the estimated delivery date and often before. I purchased this to learn it so that I can up-skill myself.

I had never heard of it until I went looking for some of the more common accounting packages in use today. (I’m originally from the southern hemisphere which explains my ignorance.)I have used various accounting products (many tailor-made to a company) and this is so easy to follow and makes many other complicated packages look like a waste of time. It comes with a great instruction booklet that is easy to follow, I’ve used other software in the past (I’ve tried 5 others) and found Peachtree to be the best for your money. Does everything it’s suppose to and more if I wanted to. I wonder why I bought the Dummy’s Guide as I don’t think I would have needed it. Ordering is always very easy.
